Love is in the air...

...at least if you're a cicada...i know we have cicadas in the states, but not on the level or volume that i've seen here in japan...these little 3"-or-so buggers are EVERYWHERE, and they are loud suckers...like many creatures around the earth, these guys' (gals') short lives are devoted to one thing, and one thing only--makin' babies!! and right about now is prime baby-makin' season...thus, they gather on pretty much anything, but especially trees, and especially the one right next to our apartment, and chortle away to attract mates...then they get it on!!...then they die...
...in a week or so it will be a virtual cicada battlefield around here, with their carcasses everywhere, lying belly up on the patio, the sidewalk, smashed to bits in the middle of the road, in the mouths of birds, with some dying and/or oversexed souls simply just sitting on the ground making no effort to do anything but die...
...i would describe their sound as that of a lawn mower engine that sputters to life, and slowly builds until the engine is spinning away at full tilt...i'd say the cicadas here are easily as loud as a lawn mower...then, imagine that lawn mower runs out of gas, or has an orgasm (in the case of the cicada), and the engine speeds up just a little more, then slowly runs out of steam...that's what i think of when i hear cicadas...they are crazy little beasts...
