Cape Cod League Baseball

...one of the many pleasures of being on cape cod during the summer is the opportunity to catch some cape league baseball games...this is a non-professional summer league whose teams are made up of the nations top college ball players...it is regarded as one of the best because the players are all very talented and it is one of the few non-pro leagues to use wooden bats...i heard today that 1 in 6 cape league players goes on to the majors, and if you ever have a chance to look at past rosters you'll find many familiar names, if you are a baseball fan at least...there are a handful of teams scattered around the cape and they play at small, nostalgic fields where legions of fans come each night...i remember when i was a kid attending summer baseball camps that are run by the players each year...it was a great experience for me to befriend and idolize these guys as a youngster...now, going to the games, the players are all 5 or 6 years younger than me...weird
...the players stay with local families for the summer, which is a thrill for any children who may be part of the family...they usually take part-time work around town for carpenters, painters, landscapers, etc...but the focus for them is on playing baseball...a great book if you are interested in getting more of a feel for this unique baseball league is called 'The Last Best League,' but the author's name escapes me...so, if you find yourself on cape cod during the summer, just check the local papers for schedules and you will not be dissappointed...
...last night my father, uncle and i went to a game between the cotuit kettleers and the falmouth condors...cotuit, my default hometown team, came away victorious...it's been years since i went to one of these games but i love being so close to the action of such hi-caliber baseball...check it out!
