...for the past two nights chieko and i have gone to the grocery store, only to find it closed at an unreasonable hour due to new years...they really drag it out here...but things have returned to normal business hours around here, and tonight we were happy to gain entry to the supermarket and finally get some food...
...i took along my camera in the hopes of finding some examples of weird japanese food, the best of which are usually found in the seafood section...i wasn't totally impressed, as everything was pretty standard fare, and though certainly odd, there wasn't anything i don't see every time i go shopping...i did find a few interesting bits though...
Chunk 'o' Octopus
...these suckers (harhar) were about 6 inches long and several inches thick...about $10/chunk...i'm not an ocotopus fan, but chieko would make quick work of one of these with fork and knife and perhaps some soy sauce...cooking not necessarily required...they were selling bucket 'o' octopus nearby...don't know why i didn't take a pictures of that...
Bag 'o' Dried Fish
...people eat these like we eat peanuts in the west...i'll stick to peanuts...one thing i've learned since coming to japan is that i don't like my food to resemble the actual animal it came from...go to a restaurant in the states and order fish, you get a nice filet of something...go to a restaurant in japan and order fish, they bring you a damn fish...you have to pick through it, eat half, remove the spine, eat the other half...plus you have to deal with all the organs and such, which most poeple here just eat...
...i've got a headache and a full stomach, and there's only one cure for that combo: sleep...so it's off to bed for this immigrant...night night

I'm sure the Octopus tasts like chicken.
I don't eat fish, so I would likely starve in Asia.
i wish octopus tasted like chicken, but it's more like fish bubble gum...
i think you'd get by here shades...i'm not nuts about fish and i'm hanging in there...
