I don't feel like getting into a big analysis of what's going on with the Sox, suffice to say that they are hard pressed to lose games lately. I like 35-15 through the first 50 games of the season. But you know, it's only May.
Some highs: Kevin Youkilis is a hitting monster with a 21 game hit streak, of which I think the last 9 have been multi-hit affairs. Daisuke has won his last six decisions with minimal meltdowns. Manny appears to be heating up. Josh Beckett made his first start in a few weeks and 3 hit the Indians, a very good team by the way, to make him 8-0 on the season. Mike Lowell.
Some lows: JD Drew isn't earning his keep thus far in his short tenure with the Red Sox. Willy Moe Pena can't seem to field a ball cleanly. Julio Lugo: .230-ish. Papelbon has had moments of uncharacteristic mortality recently, and I'm not sure how confident I am long term in the bullpen in general, sans Papelbon and everyone's second favorite Japanese Red Sock, Hideki Okajima.
But there ain't a whole lot to complain about for us Red Sox fans these days. And to boot, the Yankees are self-destructing before our eyes, setting up shop in the basement of the AL East. What the hell ever happened to the mighty AL East, by the way? The Red Sox are the only team above .500 in what was once (up until this year) the most competitive division in baseball. Looks like the AL Central is the new AL East.

the only thing a red sox fan could complain about is that they aren't Minnesota Twins fans. we get quality baseball almost every year for one-fifth the price. oh, and we have that beautiful playing facility known as the Metrodome. divine. i just hope the red sox don't turn into their arch nemesis (the yankees) by inflating their payroll and going by the "buy a championship" mentality. it might be too late though.
ultimately, i am envious and wish the twins were as entertaining as the red sox.

I have been very busy the past few months, so I haven't been to your patch of internet in a while....You've been busy too! It's taken me a while to catch up, but I'm glad I have as your blog has been a nice departure from my stressful schedule....

izzy--who wouldn't envy the metrodome and the whole garbage bag motif they have going on in the outfield...will have to get myself up there some day...the money is crazy, but i don't get the sense that the sox are buying championships...yet...(suppose you have to win a few to qualify for that though)

sheryl, don't cry...in some tiny, dark, but mostly tiny place in my brain, there is a little granule of pity for the yankees and their fans, but i'm not going to let that see the light of day until you all are officially dead and gone for this season...

As for the Sox payroll. It will go down a lot over the next 2 years. Schilling and his $16 million will be gone. Wake and his $6 or 9 million will be gone. Manny and his $20 million is gone in 2 years. That's about $42 million (or the entire Tampa Bay Devil Rays team salary) right there.
